Getting to Dubrovnik

Air

Flying is the fastest, easiest and most affordable way to get to Dubrovnik. Dubrovnik has its own airport:

http://www.airport-dubrovnik.hr/index.php/en/

The airport is located approximately 15.5 km from Dubrovnik city centre. Atlas travel agency buses upon arrival of every regular flight, price 40kn (< $6 US), public bus transportation company “Libertas” and taxi service (the price is approximately 250 HKR).

Bus

Bus lines connect Dubrovnik with some cities in Germany and Italy, all larger cities in Croatia as well as Bosnia and Hercegovina. See: http://www.autobusni-kolodvor.com/en/default.aspx

Boat

Ferry services connect Dubrovnik with Italy (Bari), Adriatic coastal cities in Croatia (Split & Rijeka) and Croatian islands (Korcula, Hvar). Many other cruiser ships have regular calls to Dubrovnik. See:

http://www.jadrolinija.hr/default.aspx?lang=2

Car
You need to have a valid driving license, vehicle registration document, and a green card (certificate of insurance). Cars drive on the right side of the road (overtaking on the left). You should know that the roads in Croatia during the summer time tend to be overcrowded especially on border crossings. Please note that allowed alcohol blood level content in Croatia is 0.0, and everything above is punishable by law.

If you choose to drive then the recommended way is to follow the autobahn to Split and from Split continue to Dubrovnik following the Adriatic coast road which is single-carriageway and closely follows the coastline. The view and feel along this Adriatic road is miraculous although the road may be strenuous for those not used to driving. The trip from Split to Dubrovnik takes about 3.5 to 4 hours’ drive.

If you are not up for driving, you can always load your car onto a ferry in Rijeka or Split. For more details please consult arriving by boat.

Symposia

  1. Prefrontal network contributions to cognition

Session Chair: Dr. Paula Croxson, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, New York, USA

Frequently referred to as the peak of the cortical hierarchy, the prefrontal cortex (PFC) is assigned a bewilderingly wide range of roles in cognition, and probably in fact represents a domain-general multiple-demand system for implementing control of cognition in many different contexts. It has become clear over recent years that PFC function is best understood by studying it within its network, and considering specific interactions between PFC and target systems, be they cortical, subcortical, or pharmacological. The aim of this symposium is to reveal both specific and general contributions of PFC to cognition, through talks that each treat PFC function through the lens of a particular anatomical or neurochemical interaction.

2. New perspectives on episodic memory and aging

Session Chair: Dr. Audrey Duarte, Georgia Institute of Technology, USA

Age-related episodic memory impairments are well known. Numerous behavioral and cognitive neuroscience studies over the past few decades have investigated the underlying causes of these impairments, and several neurocognitive theories have been developed to explain lifespan memory changes. Many unanswered questions remain but what is clear is that lifespan changes in memory are much more nuanced than previously believed.  In this symposium, we will present new perspectives about age-related memory decline and discuss some of the conditions that exacerbate or limit this decline. Elizabeth Kensinger will discuss age-related changes in emotional memory retrieval. Nancy Dennis will evaluate the utility of the scaffolding theory of aging across a number of cognitive domains, including memory. Audrey Duarte will discuss the aspects of cognitive control that may be particularly implicated in age-related memory impairments. Angela Gutchess will discuss how culture influences memory functioning across age. Natasha Rajah will discuss context memory decline in middle-aged adults, and how specific AD risk factors impact the neural networks engaged during successful context encoding and retrieval at midlife.
